You might notice this in everyday life:
- One part of you wants to go to the gym — another part wants to stay on the couch
- One part feels confident — another part feels scared or self-critical
These are parts of your inner system. They each have their own feelings, roles, and stories. In IFS, we get curious about these parts instead of fighting them.
"Every part of you has something important to say — even the ones that feel hard to be around."
The Three Common Types of Parts
🛡 Protectors
These parts try to keep you safe. They may show up as perfectionism, overthinking, people-pleasing, or shutting down. They're not the enemy — they're working hard on your behalf.
🌧 Exiles
These are younger parts that carry old hurt, shame, or fear. Protectors work hard to keep these feelings from overwhelming you — often by pushing them far out of reach.
✨ Self
At the center of your system is your Self — the calm, compassionate, wise presence that can listen to every part without judgment. When your Self is leading, your parts don't have to fight each other. They can relax and work together.
What Happens in Parts Work?
Instead of trying to "get rid of" difficult feelings, we:
- Slow down
- Notice the part that's showing up
- Get curious about its role
- Listen to what it needs
When parts feel understood, they often soften and change naturally.
Healing happens when your system learns that it doesn't have to carry everything alone anymore.
